Frostflare is a coaster that holds a temperature. Put a cup on it, pick a temperature, and it keeps the drink there — 8 °C for something iced, 15 °C cool, 45 °C warm, 58 °C hot, or anything in between. The same coaster does both: it chills and it heats. With no cup on it, the 560×170 screen is a desk clock, the weather, or a photo of yours.
霜焰是一块会控温的杯垫。放上杯子、选一个温度，它就把饮料一直守在那里 —— 冰饮 8 °C、清凉 15 °C、温热 45 °C、热饮 58 °C，中间任意温度也行。同一块垫子既能冰也能热。没放杯子的时候，那块 560×170 的屏就是桌上的时钟、天气，或者你自己的一张照片。
The light under the base shows the temperature: blue when the drink is cold, orange when it is hot. You can see it from across the room without looking at the screen.
底座下的那圈光就是温度：冷是蓝的，热是橙的。不用低头看屏幕，隔着半个房间也知道。
Most warming coasters are a hot plate with a switch, and the cold ones are a different product on a different shelf. Frostflare is one surface that does both, and it holds a temperature instead of just pushing heat at it.
市面上的保温杯垫多半是一块带开关的加热板，能制冷的通常是另一件产品。霜焰是同一个面既能冰也能温，而且它守的是温度，不是一味地加热。
A cooling element does not work like a heating coil. Turn the current all the way up and it makes more heat than it moves, so you get more noise, more power and a drink that is not as cold. Frostflare measures the element while it runs and finds the setting that actually gets coldest. Same drink, same temperature, quieter and cheaper than simply pushing harder.
制冷片和电热丝不一样：电流开到最大，它自己产生的热比抽走的还多，于是更吵、更费电，杯子反而没那么冷。霜焰一边工作一边测这片制冷片的状态，算出此刻真正最冷的那一档。同样一杯饮料、同样的温度，它比一味加大功率更安静、更省电。
Iced coffee in July, hot milk in January, on the same coaster. Heating is the same heat pump running backwards, not a second heater stuck on the back. Switch from cold to hot halfway through and it crosses over smoothly instead of snapping across.
七月的冰美式和一月的热牛奶，同一块杯垫就够了。加热是同一个热泵反过来抽，不是背面再贴一根电热丝。中途从冰改成热，它会平顺地过渡，不会顿一下。
It measures the room's temperature and humidity, works out when the air is about to condense, and speeds the fan up before there is anything on your desk to wipe.
它测着房间的温度和湿度，算得出空气什么时候会结露，在桌上出现水珠之前就先把风扇转快一点。
Fast, quiet, frugal — you cannot have all three at once. Most things pick for you and say nothing. Frostflare puts the trade-off on the screen, in plain words, before you choose.

A 560×170 panel is an awkward shape for a photo and a lovely one for a desk. There are four pages: swipe between them, hide the ones you will not use, put them in the order you like. Whichever one is up, the cup's temperature stays in the corner. Every picture below is drawn by the coaster itself.
560×170 这个比例对照片不友好，对桌面很友好。一共四页：左右滑动换页，用不上的可以隐藏，顺序也能自己排。无论停在哪一页，杯底温度都留在角落里。下面每一张都是杯垫自己画出来的。
How much power it is drawing, the last ten minutes of it, and the rail underneath: the whole range from ice-cold to hot, with your four presets marked, where the drink is now and where it is heading.

Send a photo from the app and the coaster becomes a small picture frame that also tells the time. Choose whether the clock and the date are on it, and what colour they are — or leave the picture alone entirely.
在 App 里发一张照片过去，杯垫就成了一个会报时的小相框。时钟和日期显不显示、是什么颜色，都你说了算；不想要，整张图留白也行。
Now, the next 24 hours and the week ahead. Your city comes across from your phone when you set the coaster up — there is nothing to type on a device with one knob.

A few symbols with the day's line beside each one, coloured the way your market reads them — red is up in Shanghai and Hong Kong, down in New York. Edit the list in the app; glance at it on the desk.

One rule, and you have it in a second: the knob is the drink, the touchscreen is the screen.

Turn for the temperature, click for the mode, double-click for cooling or heating, hold for on and off. You never have to remember which page you are on — the knob means the same thing everywhere.

Open the app next to it and it is done: no serial number to type, no code to find on a sticker. From then on you can set the temperature, change the schedule, send a new picture or update it from anywhere you have signal.
开着 App 走到它旁边就配好了：不用输序列号，也不用在标签上找配对码。之后有网的地方都能调温度、改定时、换一张图、给它升级。
Set it to be warm before you sit down, or to switch itself off an hour after you last touched it. The schedule is stored in the coaster, so it still runs when your phone is somewhere else.
让它在你坐下之前就热好，或者在你一小时没碰它之后自己关掉。定时存在杯垫里，手机不在身边也照常执行。
It checks itself five hundred times a second: current, both surface temperatures, the supply. Any of them at its limit and it stops rather than push on. If the software ever locks up it restarts itself, and the heating cuts out the moment it does — that is the circuit, not something the software promises. Leave it on while you are out.
它每秒检查自己五百次：电流、两面的温度、输入电压，任何一项到上限就停下来，不会硬顶。万一软件卡住，它会自动重启，而重启的那一刻加热就断了 —— 这是电路本身的设计，不靠软件保证。人不在家也可以让它开着。
New features arrive over Wi-Fi, from the app, in about a minute. If the network drops halfway through it keeps the version it had and carries on. A failed update cannot leave you with a coaster that will not start.
